Naperville runs one of the more generous residential bulk pickup programs in the suburbs, but the rules still trip people up during spring cleaning season. This guide covers exactly what Groot will and won’t take, the city’s HHW facility (one of the best in the state), what a self-haul actually costs, and when hiring a junk removal company ends up being the simpler call.
Naperville Bulk Pickup: What You Get
Naperville uses Groot for residential collection (contact: (630) 892-9294, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays). Residents get two bulk items per week at no extra charge, as long as each item can be lifted by one driver without assistance. Call Groot in advance to let them know what’s going out.
Appliances are handled separately: Groot will collect one appliance per week at no extra charge. This includes washers, dryers, dishwashers, water heaters, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers. You still need to call ahead.
Oversized items that need special pickup and an added fee: hot tubs, pianos, and anything else that requires two or more people to lift. Call Groot for a quote and scheduling window.
What Naperville Curbside Won’t Take
- Tires
- Hazardous liquids
- Landscape materials (dirt, rocks, sod)
- Televisions and electronics (these go to the HHW facility or electronics events)
- Car batteries
- Hot tubs and pianos without special scheduling
The electronics restriction catches people every spring. If you’re cleaning out a basement or office and have an old TV, computer monitors, or a printer pile alongside furniture and appliances, those electronics cannot go curbside. They need a separate trip or a separate arrangement.
Naperville’s Spring and Seasonal Programs
Brush collection begins in early May (May 4, 2026). Residents can place large quantities of brush at the curb at no cost during this window.
Leaf collection runs three cycles in fall: typically mid-October through late November. Loose leaves placed at the curb, no bags required.
For general junk and large items, there is no dedicated citywide spring dump day in Naperville. The curbside program handles it, within the per-week limits above.
Naperville HHW Facility: One of the Best in Illinois
Naperville operates a permanent Household Hazardous Waste facility at 156 Fort Hill Drive, Naperville, IL 60540. This is one of only five permanent HHW facilities in Illinois contracted with the state EPA, and it is open to all Illinois residents, not just Naperville.
Hours: Every Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. No appointment. No fee. Closed Easter Sunday, Independence Day, and the day after Christmas.
Accepted: Oil-based paints and stains, aerosols, automotive fluids (motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid), batteries, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs and CFLs, household cleaners, mercury-containing items, pesticides and fertilizers, propane tanks up to 20 lbs, solvents and strippers, pool chemicals, e-cigarettes and vape pods.
Not accepted: Latex paint (let it dry or use a paint hardener, then it goes in the regular trash), ammunition, medications (use a pharmacy take-back program), tires, smoke detectors, empty aerosol cans.
The Naperville facility is also the closest permanent HHW option for residents of Aurora, Batavia, Geneva, Oswego, and the surrounding area.
What Self-Hauling Actually Costs in Naperville
There is no public transfer station inside Naperville for residential self-haul. The nearest options are in Elburn and West Chicago, both under Groot or other commercial operators, at commercial tonnage rates with a one-ton minimum. For a residential load that doesn’t fill a full ton, you pay the minimum anyway.
Run the numbers: truck rental ($100-$150 for a half-day), fuel ($20-$40), transfer station minimum fee ($50-$80+ estimated), plus loading, driving, and unloading time. A self-haul cleanout for a garage or basement worth of stuff typically costs $200-$350 in hard costs, plus your Saturday.
Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 868 IL-59, Naperville accepts furniture and building materials in good condition, which can offset some of this if items are donatable. But they won’t take everything, and they don’t pick up.
When Hiring Junk Removal Makes More Sense
Two bulk items per week is fine for ongoing decluttering. It is not enough for a garage cleanout, a basement clear-out after a renovation, a move-out, or an estate. If you’re looking at 10-20 items including some appliances, hot tub, or electronics mixed in, hiring typically costs the same or less than self-haul once you price it out, and takes a fraction of the time.
We handle appliances, electronics, hot tubs, furniture, and general junk in one load, and we work around HOA scheduling requirements. Same-day service often available. Call (630) 492-1490 for an estimate.
