The shed served its purpose. Then the roof started sagging, one wall rotted through where the sprinkler hit it every summer, and the door hasn’t closed right since 2019. Or maybe the shed is fine and the new fence line runs right through it. Or you’re selling the house and the inspector flagged the whole thing as a liability. Either way, it needs to come down and go away, and it isn’t fitting in a curbside bin.

Shed removal is a demolition job, not a pickup. Sledgehammer, reciprocating saw, pry bar, and a few hours of sorted teardown. Aurora’s regular bulk pickup won’t come by and grab a shed off your lawn, and you can’t put shed panels on the curb with normal trash. What Counts as Shed Removal

Shed removal covers full teardown and haul-away of a residential outbuilding. That includes:

• Wood-framed sheds with plywood or T-111 siding and shingle roofs
• Metal sheds (galvanized panels, tin roofs, aluminum kits)
• Plastic and resin sheds (Rubbermaid, Suncast, Keter style)
• Vinyl sheds and vinyl-clad wood frames
• Barn-style sheds and gambrel-roof sheds
• Lean-to sheds attached to a fence or garage wall
• The contents of the shed (rakes, hoses, old paint cans, whatever’s inside)

What we don’t include by default: pouring a new patio where the shed sat, repairing a fence that has to be temporarily opened to get materials out, or removing a full concrete slab foundation. The slab usually stays. If you want the slab out too, we quote that separately because it’s a different tool set.

What Actually Drives the Price

Three things shift the number. First is size and material. A 6×8 metal shed goes down in an afternoon. A 12×16 wood barn-style shed with a loft and shingles is a full day. Second is what’s inside. An empty shed is a straight demo. A shed packed with old lawn equipment, half-full paint cans, and 20 years of “I’ll deal with that later” is a demo plus a full load-out. Third is access. A shed in an open backyard with a wide gate is easy. A shed behind a locked fence with a narrow side yard means we’re wheelbarrowing debris the long way around.

For a small, empty, easy-access shed, jobs sometimes get close to our flat $89 curbside pricing on the light end. Most sheds are more than that once you factor in the teardown and multiple loads of debris. Every shed removal gets a specific quote on the phone. Upfront pricing, no changes at the door.

How Aurora’s Bulk Pickup Actually Works, And When It Doesn’t

Aurora’s residential trash contractor is Groot. Weekly trash, recycling, yard waste, and a limited bulk program. Shed removal is not part of any of that. Even if you tear the shed down yourself, the debris is more than a curbside bin holds, includes mixed materials Groot doesn’t compact (metal panels, plywood, shingles, plastic siding), and would take weeks of small pickups to clear out one bag at a time.

Some homeowners try to game it by breaking the shed down slowly and putting a wall or two in the yard-waste bin every week. Yard waste is for organic material, so that doesn’t fly. How This Compares to Your Other Options

Option one is DIY. If you own a sledgehammer, a reciprocating saw, a truck with a dump insert, and a weekend, you can do it. You’ll still make three or four trips to a transfer station, pay per-ton disposal fees, and sort metal separately if you want scrap value. Option two is hiring a general contractor to fold shed demo into a bigger project (fence replacement, patio install). That works if you’re already doing the bigger project, and it usually costs more per hour than junk removal because contractor rates are contractor rates.

Where the Shed Materials Actually Go

Sheds are mixed materials, and each material has its right destination. Metal siding, tin roofing, and any steel framing go to scrap: All American Recycling on Mitchell Road and S&S Metal Recyclers on Sullivan Road, both in Aurora. Wood framing and plywood, if dry and untreated, go to a wood-recycling processor. Wet, rotted, or pressure-treated wood goes to the transfer station because it can’t be recycled cleanly.

Asphalt shingles go to a shingle-recycling drop-off when the load is clean enough; otherwise they go to landfill. Plastic and resin shed panels go to landfill because there’s no viable recycling stream for them in this area. Old paint cans, pesticides, or fuel found inside the shed get taken to the Naperville HHW facility at 156 Fort Hill Drive, which is the closest regional drop-off for household hazardous waste.

What Happens the Day of Your Shed Removal

1. We call or text when we’re on the way, usually 30 to 45 minutes out.
2. We walk the shed with you, confirm size and contents, and lock in the quote before the first tool comes out.
3. We clear the interior first. Contents come out and get sorted for haul, donation, or hazardous drop-off.
4. We take the shed down in the right order: roof shingles or panels off first, then roof framing, then walls, then floor if there is one. Doing it in the right order keeps the walls from folding in on us.
5. We sort as we go: metal in one pile, wood in another, plastic and shingles separate. Sorting on site is faster than sorting at the yard.
6. We sweep the pad, whether it’s concrete, gravel, or dirt, and take away every last nail we can pull with a magnet sweep.
7. Materials leave for the right destinations: scrap yard, wood recycling, transfer station, HHW for anything hazardous.

How to Prep for a Faster, Cheaper Shed Removal

The single biggest thing you can do: empty the shed before we arrive. Every item still inside is an item we’re handling. If you can move the mower, the bikes, and the boxes of holiday lights to the garage first, the job drops in price and time.

Second thing: check for utility easements. If your shed sits on a utility easement, or if it’s attached to your fence or garage in a way that could affect a permit or a property line, tell us on the phone. It won’t stop the job, but it changes what we need to know before we start. Third thing: if the shed has any live electrical (some folks ran an extension out for a light or an outlet), kill the power at the source and let us know where the wire runs.
