Oswego, IL Bulk Pickup and Spring Cleanup Guide

Oswego runs two free cleanup collection weeks per year, spring and fall, and they’re genuinely useful. But there’s a catch: appliances, TVs, and electronics are explicitly excluded from both events. If your spring cleanout includes any of those items, you need a separate plan. This guide covers the spring and fall collection rules, what Groot takes year-round, where to take hazardous waste and electronics, and when to call a junk removal company instead.

Oswego Bulk Pickup: Year-Round Rules

Most Oswego residents use Groot for garbage and recycling, though Waste Management, LRS, and Nancy and Jerry’s also operate in the area. Contact Groot at (630) 892-9294. Items should be at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day.

Standard bulk items can go out on your regular garbage day. Call Groot ahead of time to confirm they’ll pick up a specific large item. Appliances require advance scheduling and typically carry a per-item fee. Items that require two people to move need a special pickup arrangement.

Yard waste runs weekly from the week of April 6 through December 4, 2026. Stickers are required for yard waste bags at $2.50 each.

Oswego’s Free Spring and Fall Cleanup Collections

Spring 2026: Week of April 6, on your regular scheduled garbage day.

Fall 2026: Week of November 9, on your regular scheduled garbage day.

During these weeks, residents can put out extra household waste, yard waste in Kraft bags, and bulk items like couches, desks, and mattresses at no extra charge.

What is specifically excluded from both events:

  • Hazardous waste of any kind
  • Appliances (no washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves)
  • Televisions
  • Electronics of any kind
  • Old lawn chemicals and solvents

This exclusion matters for spring cleanouts. A typical basement or garage clear-out might have an old TV, a broken appliance, and a couch all going out at the same time. The couch goes in the spring cleanup. The appliance and TV need separate handling.

Household Hazardous Waste Near Oswego

Oswego does not have a local HHW facility. The closest permanent option is the Naperville HHW Facility at 156 Fort Hill Drive, Naperville, IL 60540. Open every Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., free for all Illinois residents, no appointment needed. Accepts oil-based paints, aerosols, automotive fluids, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, pesticides, propane tanks up to 20 lbs, and solvents. Does not accept latex paint, ammunition, tires, or medications.

For electronics specifically, the Kane County Recycling Center (517 E. Fabyan Pkwy., Geneva, IL) is the nearest weekday electronics drop-off. Open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. TVs and monitors accepted with a small fee.

Illinois EPA also runs periodic mobile HHW collection events in Kendall County. Check the IEPA website for upcoming dates near Oswego.

What Self-Hauling Costs from Oswego

Transfer stations serving Kendall County charge at commercial tonnage rates. For a residential load, you typically pay a minimum regardless of actual weight. A truck rental, fuel, and the minimum dump fee for a moderately sized load runs $200-$350 in hard costs. Kendall County is more rural than Kane or DuPage, and transfer station options are fewer.

If you have clean metal (old fencing, scrap copper, steel appliance shells), scrap yards in Aurora accept it on weekdays and Saturday mornings. Worth a targeted trip but not a general disposal strategy.

When to Hire Junk Removal in Oswego

Oswego’s newer subdivisions and its HOA communities often have timeline requirements for how long debris can sit at the curb or in a backyard. If you’re on a deadline, the spring cleanup week is a firm date, not a flexible window. If your cleanout includes appliances, electronics, or anything the spring cleanup won’t touch, you need a plan B before that week arrives.

A junk removal crew can clear the whole load including the appliances and electronics in one trip. No second appointment, no separate HHW run, no waiting until the fall cleanup week. Same-day service is often available. Call (630) 492-1490.
