Batavia, IL Bulk Pickup and Junk Disposal Guide

Batavia’s historic neighborhoods along the Fox River come with charm and old homes. They also come with basements, garages, and outbuildings that have been accumulating things for decades. This guide covers Batavia’s bulk pickup program through Groot, where to take hazardous materials and electronics (there’s a Kane County recycling center right in town), what self-hauling costs, and when it’s easier to hire out.

Batavia Bulk Pickup: How It Works

Batavia contracts with Groot for residential garbage and recycling. Groot begins collection at 7 a.m., so bulk items need to be at the curb the night before or very early on collection day. Call (630) 892-9294 at least 24 hours ahead to notify Groot of what you’re putting out. Items need to be manageable for a single driver.

Appliances like washers, dryers, refrigerators, and water heaters require an advance call and may carry a per-item fee depending on the specific item and condition. Items with refrigerants (refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers) are treated as white goods and typically need a sticker or advance arrangement. Anything too heavy or large for one person requires special scheduling.

What Curbside Won’t Handle in Batavia

  • Televisions and electronics
  • Hazardous materials (oil-based paint, chemicals, motor oil)
  • Tires and car batteries
  • Hot tubs and heavy specialty items
  • Large construction debris

Spring Cleanup in Batavia

Batavia runs free spring yard waste collection each year, typically starting in April. Brush, trimmings, and yard waste go curbside in the standard yard waste bags or bundled. Check the City of Batavia’s Public Works page or contact Groot for the 2026 yard waste start date and schedule for your street.

For electronics, the Kane County Recycling Center (directly below) is open year-round and is the most convenient option for Batavia residents.

Household Hazardous Waste in Batavia

Kane County Recycling Center at 517 E. Fabyan Pkwy., Geneva, IL 60134 (just a few minutes from downtown Batavia): Open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Accepts household electronics. TVs and monitors carry a small fee. Contact: (630) 208-3841.

Naperville HHW Facility (156 Fort Hill Drive, Naperville, IL 60540): Open every Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., free, no appointment. Accepts oil-based paints, aerosols, automotive fluids, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, pesticides, propane tanks up to 20 lbs, and solvents. Latex paint is not accepted; dry it first, then it goes in regular trash.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore (Elgin, 800 N. State St., and Naperville, 868 IL-59): Accepts used furniture, appliances, and building materials in good condition. Useful for clearing out a renovation or estate situation where items still have life left in them.

What Self-Hauling Costs from Batavia

Kane County transfer stations charge commercial tonnage rates with a one-ton minimum. For a typical residential load from a garage or basement cleanout, you’ll likely pay the minimum anyway. Add a truck rental ($100-$150), fuel, and your time loading and driving, and a self-haul run for a moderately sized cleanout lands in the $200-$350 range in hard costs. That’s before counting labor.

Scrap metal recyclers in Aurora (about 10 minutes away) will take clean metal and some appliances, but they operate on weekday business hours and require you to sort materials. Worth a call if you have significant copper, aluminum, or ferrous metal. Less useful as a general junk disposal strategy.

When to Hire a Junk Removal Company

Batavia’s older housing stock means spring cleanouts often turn up old sheds, attic contents, basement workshops, and multi-decade accumulations. The curbside program handles a few items at a time. When you’re looking at clearing out a full garage or shed, or dealing with appliances and electronics mixed into the load, hiring out is often the same price as doing it yourself once you add up the truck, dump fees, and your time.

We work around Batavia’s Fox River property access situations and can coordinate same-day or next-day service. Call (630) 492-1490 for an estimate.
