The hot tub was great for the first few years. Hot tub removal is a specialty job. It’s not something you drag to the curb, and it’s not something Aurora’s regular bulk pickup will touch. Hot tub removal covers the full teardown and haul-away of a residential spa. That includes:
- Standard 4 to 8 person acrylic or fiberglass hot tubs
- Roto-molded plastic tubs (the lighter, one-piece style)

What isn’t included by default: pouring a new concrete pad, repairing the deck we had to open up, or rewiring your subpanel. If any of those come up, we tell you before we start so you can bring in the right trade.
What Actually Drives the Price
Four factors move the number. First is access. A tub sitting in an open backyard with a wide gate is a very different job than a tub wedged onto a second-story deck with a spiral staircase as the only way down. Second is surround construction. If a deck was built around the tub after the fact, part of that deck has to come apart to get the shell out. Third is disconnect complexity. Most tubs are hardwired 240V on a dedicated breaker, and that has to be safely killed and detached. Fourth is the tub itself: a heavy acrylic shell with a wood frame breaks down differently than a molded plastic one-piece.
Most hot tub jobs run four to six hours on site with specialty tools (reciprocating saw, sledgehammer, pump for stubborn drains). Because of that, hot tub removal isn’t a $89 curbside job. That flat rate covers a single item at the curb, and a hot tub is never that. Every hot tub removal gets a specific quote on the phone once we know the make, size, and where it sits. How Aurora’s Bulk Pickup Actually Works, And When It Doesn’t
Aurora’s residential trash contractor is Groot. Groot handles weekly trash, recycling, yard waste, and a limited bulk program. Hot tubs are not on that list. They aren’t a “call-ahead white good” like a refrigerator, they aren’t a bulk item like a couch, and they aren’t something a rear-loader packer truck can compact. Even if you cut a tub down to pieces yourself, the volume of shell, foam insulation, wet wood framing, and mixed plumbing is more than a curbside bin holds and more than the bulk contractor accepts.

How This Compares to Your Other Options
Option one is selling it. Realistic only if the tub is under about eight years old, holds water, and runs. Even then, the buyer needs a trailer, a helper, and the willingness to do the disconnect. Option two is DIY. If you have a reciprocating saw, a sledgehammer, a submersible pump, a working knowledge of your electrical panel, and a weekend to spare, you can do it. You’ll still need a dump trailer or repeated trips to a transfer station, and you’ll pay disposal fees per load.

Where the Hot Tub Actually Goes
A hot tub is a mixed-material product, which means it doesn’t all go to one place. The steel frame components, motor and pump housings, and any copper plumbing go to scrap: All American Recycling on Mitchell Road and S&S Metal Recyclers on Sullivan Road, both in Aurora, both take the metal side. The acrylic or fiberglass shell and the foam insulation head to the transfer station because they don’t recycle cleanly. Wood framing, if it’s dry and untreated, can sometimes go to wood recycling; wet or rotted framing goes to the landfill.
If the tub has any refrigerant-based cooling accessory (rare but possible on high-end units), EPA rules require refrigerant recovery before scrap. Aurora residents can also drop hazardous liquids or spa chemicals at the Naperville HHW facility at 156 Fort Hill Drive, which is the closest regional drop-off for that kind of thing.

What Happens the Day of Your Hot Tub Removal
- We call or text when we’re on the way, usually 30 to 45 minutes out.
- We walk the tub with you, confirm access, and lock in the quote before we touch anything.
- We handle the drain. Most tubs empty by gravity through a garden hose, but stubborn ones get a submersible pump. Water goes to a landscape bed, storm-safe drain, or wherever local rules allow.
- We handle the electrical disconnect at the tub side. If the run is hardwired to a subpanel that needs a licensed electrician to safely kill the breaker, we coordinate that instead of guessing.
- We disassemble in the right order: cover and cover lifter, skirting, control panel, plumbing, motor and pump, then the shell. Shell either comes out whole (if access allows) or gets cut into manageable pieces with a reciprocating saw.

How to Prep for a Faster, Cheaper Hot Tub Removal
You don’t have to prep at all. That said, a few things drop the price. If you can drain the tub in the days before we come (garden hose to a low spot), we save an hour on site. If you can move any surrounding planters, deck furniture, or grill setups out of the path, we don’t spend time rearranging your yard. If you know exactly where the breaker is and it’s labeled, the electrical shutoff moves faster.
What you shouldn’t do: don’t try to cut the shell open yourself unless you’re comfortable with a reciprocating saw and safety glasses. Fiberglass dust is nasty. Leave that part to us.

Hot tubs are not a flat rate service. Every job gets a quote on the phone once we know the make, size, access to the yard, and whether a deck or fence has to come apart. The number we quote holds when we arrive. Our $89 flat rate applies only to single curbside items, and a hot tub is never that.
Do I need to drain the hot tub before you arrive?
You don't have to, but it saves time and can lower the quote. If you can drain it in the days before by running a garden hose to a low spot in the yard, we skip that hour on site. For stubborn or fully full tubs, we bring a submersible pump. Either way, the drain step is handled.
Can Aurora's regular trash pickup take a hot tub?
No. Aurora's contractor Groot handles weekly trash, recycling, yard waste, and limited bulk. Hot tubs aren't on any of those lists. Will you handle the electrical disconnect?
Yes, at the tub side. Most hot tubs are 240V hardwired to a dedicated breaker. We shut power at the breaker, verify the tub is dead, and detach the wiring from the tub's junction box. If the run is on an old subpanel or the breaker is unlabeled, we coordinate a licensed electrician rather than guessing.
Do you have to break the hot tub apart to remove it?
Usually yes. Most tubs are too heavy and too wide to come out whole through a gate or off a deck. We disassemble in order: cover, skirting, control panel, plumbing, pump, then shell. The shell is cut into manageable sections with a reciprocating saw. That's how it fits through fence openings and onto a trailer safely.
What if my deck was built around the hot tub?
Common problem. We remove the section of decking needed to get the tub out, and we cut cleanly so the deck can be patched afterward. We don't rebuild the deck itself. If you need the deck patched or restored, we recommend bringing in a carpenter, and we'll flag exactly what needs to be done before we start.
Where does the hot tub actually go after you haul it?
